Pastor Tony Sorrells, Sr.

Progressive, Prayerful and Purposeful Leadership

The Reverend Tony M. Sorrells, Sr., at age 38, accepted the pastoral call as the 15th Pastor of the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Taylor on October 5, 1997. At the time only 26 members were in regular and faithful attendance. Yet as Peter had preached, in the last days, young men will see visions of the spiritual renewal and unity of God’s people and over the past ten years, the Church has witnessed growth spiritually, financially and numerically. Early in his administration, Pastor Sorrells began to work to rebuild Mount Calvary spiritually, financially and numerically, calling for a solid church built on a solid foundation. For a decade, Pastor Sorrells has preached and taught a consistent message: God wants to bless Mount Calvary.

Mt. Calvary continues to witness blessings and growth every year under Pastor Sorrells’ leadership. Taken from the Historical Reflections of the 105th and 109th Anniversaries, the late Church Clerk A. L. Jackson wrote: “Under the leadership of our Shepherd, Pastor Tony Sorrells, the Church has continued to be blessed; the Church Family is trying to be faithful and obedient to the teachings of God’s Word. There is more love, unity and fellowship on exhibit. We believe that a church that studies together and prays together will stay together.”

Under Pastor Sorrells’ leadership, many accomplishments have been made including the reconstruction or establishment of more than twenty ministries, the purchase of a Church Van, office equipment and computers, the redesign of the Youth Ministry, Women’s Ministries, and Brotherhood; the establishment of the Emergency Relief Fund, the Church Building Fund, and the establishment of the Janice Simms Education Scholarship. Five Deacons have been ordained under his leadership: Deacons Sterling Simms, Desmond Aldridge, Rickie Kerley, Robert Ackerman, and O.D. Thompson; two Deacons came by Letter: Deacon Clarence Slaughter and Deacon Kevin Henderson. Two Ministers accepted their calling at Mt. Calvary: Rev. Keith Wallace and Rev. Roosevelt Harris. Rev. F. L. Harris became a member of Mt. Calvary in 2005.

Pastor Sorrells is a community based leader and has a heart for the community. Annually, Pastor Sorrells takes his youth and youth leaders and families to the two-day Spring Break Youth Conference, “Youth United Against Drugs and Gangs.” He also sponsors every summer more than 25 youths aged 10-12 years to attend the weeklong Christian camp, Camp Hoblitzelle. He served as President of the Taylor Salvation Army for 17 years, only recently stepping down in 2016 to put more time into full time pastoring.  He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Williamson-Burnet Counties and Opportunities, the Temple Community College at Taylor, and the Campus Improvement Board for Taylor Independent School District, and former President of the Blackshear-O. L. Price Ministerial Alliance. The Taylor Community Network (Taylor CNET) provides a computer lab for the Taylor community, housed at Mt. Calvary under the direction of Pastor Sorrells. His most recent appointment is Board member of the Interagency Support Group of Williamson County, Texas, which provides mental health services to residents with mental health needs in eastern Williamson County which covers seven rural towns. Approximately 3,000 persons benefit from these services.

Pastor Sorrells’ leadership, passion for Christ and vision extends beyond Mt. Calvary. He is a member and leader in the Taylor Ministerial Alliance. He is the President of the Round Rock Sub-District of the St. John’s Regular Baptist Association of Texas. Pastor Sorrells received his Associate of Arts degree from Temple College.  Pastor Sorrells is married to Dr. Audrey Sorrells and they are the parents of six adult children, Minister Whittney McCray, Gilbert "Chris" McCray; Iris (Marcus) Bunton, Kendra Deary, Tony Michael, Jr.,(Julia),  and Tonya (Tremale) Bouldin. They have seven grandchildren, Kenyon and Faith Bunton; Tremale and Torii Bouldin; Toni Michelle, Tony Michael, III, and Toné Mylik Sorrells.
